Gezi victim Berkin Elvan dies

15-year-old Berkin, a member of the Istanbul Student Collective, was severely injured when he was struck in the head with a police tear-gas canister last June during the Gezi uprisings. At the time he was going to the bakery to buy bread.

Berkin who marked his 15th birthday in intensive care on 5 January has died today after remaining in a coma for 269 days.

Berkin’s parents said in a message on Twitter that; “To our people: We lost our son Berkin Elvan at 7 a.m. in the morning. Condolences to us all.”

Elvan’s condition had worsened over the last week as the boy who weighed 45 kilos when shot recently dropped to 16 kilos.
